Vulcan Inc. has appointed John W. Bernstein as chief financial officer, underscoring the organization’s commitment to its philanthropic mission. Bernstein brings significant experience with large scale financial operations and in philanthropy, joining Vulcan from his five-year position as chief operating officer of the Ford Foundation, one of the world’s largest private foundations.

“Philanthropy is at the heart of my professional and personal passion,” said Bernstein, who has spent over 30 years managing some of the country’s leading not-for-profit institutions. “Vulcan’s diverse philanthropic portfolio, and the fact that its commercial divisions directly fuel its mission, present significant growth opportunities to make a positive difference in the world.”

Prior to joining the Ford Foundation, Bernstein helped to create and then served as the founding president of the Leon Levy Foundation and spent more than a decade with the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, NY. He started his management career at the New York Public Library and has continued to volunteer in foundation and cultural communities throughout the country. Bernstein received an MBA from the Wharton School following his undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and has served as a Wharton Washington Fellow at the Smithsonian Institute.

“We are thrilled to welcome John to Vulcan,” said Bill Hilf, Chief Executive Officer of Vulcan Inc. “He is an extremely well-regarded leader in finance and philanthropy, having shaped much of Ford Foundation’s operational systems to align with its values. His experience will be well tapped as we all seek to make and leave the world a better place.”

Bernstein joined the Vulcan leadership team on January 2, taking the reins of Vulcan’s finance and information technology departments.
